Band of boys
The Yatchan team dropped by the DC office and it was a laugh riot
When the team of Yatchan entered the conference hall, Vishnuvardhan commented in a lighter vein, ‘The whole setup reminds me of viva exams in my college’ (laughs). That is the precise reason why I dropped out of college while doing BSc VisCom. But trust me, all of us will be here and spend a fun-filled time’, thus creating the right mood for an interaction with the DC staff.
VISHNUVARDHAN:
On his actors: This is my fifth film with Jammy and first film with my brother Kreshna. It’s chaotic when both Arya and Kreshna are together on the sets. However I’m used to Arya — for me he is more like a brother. Whenever I start a film my amma would ask me ‘Vicky’ (that’s how they call me at home) when are you making a film with Kreshna? I was waiting for him to take off independently, and now I felt it is the right time.
Bonding with Yuvan: I know Yuvan from my school days. After school he was always behind the console and used to compose something or the other. When I became a director, I went to him for my first film to score music and it was a pleasant surprise for him. The strongest pillar for all my films is Yuvan. It’s only takes a moment to form a song between me and Yuvan.
‘Trade secret’: It is his T Nagar residence where all the songs originate. We just took five minutes for the chartbuster number Theepidikka from Arindhum Ariyamalum. I want to let you all know a secret about Yuvan. He is the only person who has a chauffeur for his costly Ducati bike (the entire team bursts into laughter). We call Pa Vijay as ‘Pavi’ (sinner). He has phenomenal patience with tolerating me and he always made sure that I was on track, and is a great support.
Yuvan Shankar Raja:
Mood matters: I and Vishnu commenced our journey together in Arindhum... At a time when remixes were not popular, we did it and set a trend then. He is someone who gives me lot of freedom and space. When it comes to composing, I just need the right frame of mind and mood. I don’t listen to any music to get into mood. But, I want my songs to be a reference for others.
Dhananjayan Govind:
Director’s vision: I should thank Vishnu for making Yatchan happen smoothly. He is also a co-producer of the film and the one thing we bonded over throughout the shooting was the trust we had in him. Vishnu used to shoot each and every scene with himself to make sure that the actors get it right when they go for the take.
Arya’s kind gesture: What I liked about Arya is that he never asked anything about the script when we approached him for the film. His only question was ‘When are we going to start the film’?
Kreshna:
Initial hiccups: I was initially intimidated by my brother and couldn’t act for the first five days. I felt as if it was my first film even though Arya warned me enough. Both Arya and Kreshna in chorus said, “Vishnu is a better actor than us.”
Road to success: I feel sucess really matters. I heard lot of actors turned down Yamirukka Bhayame when it came to me. Because the makers didn’t have a budget for the hero. The script was indeed remarkable. But I still believed in the script and it became a huge blockbuster. Similarly, for Kazhugu there were no takers but I did it and it turned out to be a hit.
Arya:
All praise for director: Vishnu is too demanding — he is an idiot. In a sense, he’s a ‘sweet idiot’ if you know him well. For example he will suddenly ask you to jump from a bridge for an action scene without any rehearsals or ropes or any stunt materials. At the end of the day he wants perfection. Jokes apart, the kind of energy he brings to the sets is amazing. That’s why I look special in his films.
On multi-starrers: I go by my gut feeling while choosing my scripts and am not bothered about who’s acting alongside me. Hence, I don’t mind doing multi-starrers. Moreover, I am a friendly person and can’t say no when someone approach me for multi-starrers. Without a filmi background, I have completed 25 films and it’s a big deal for me. I would have been like ‘Mike Mohan’, had Vishnu not insisted on dubbing my own voice in Arindhum Ariyamalum.
Marriage: Everybody asks me when I’m going to get hitched. But I myself don’t know. Vishnu interferes saying, ‘Leave him for the moment. Let him enjoy his bachelor life for some more time’.
Deepa Sannidhi:
The reticent actress: Deepa who was quiet for a while broke her silence saying, ‘‘I don’t talk much and take a long time to warm up.” Arya interferes and pulls her leg — ‘Oh your actions only speak?’
Career & co-stars: I dropped out of my professional course of architectural engineering for the sake of movies which I found more interesting. Films help one explore beyond one’s own imagination. I feel it is more challenging. Among my co-stars Siddharth and Arya, the former is more reserved while the latter is very energetic and talkative. However, I really can’t compare.
Pa Vijay:
Comfort at work: I share a great rapport with Vishnu. I don’t even take a paper to write while working with him. He is someone who gives a lot of freedom and I have the liberty to take my own time to write while associating with him.
