A win-win situation
Each time the Telugu Titans score a win in the Pro Kabaddi League, the owners will send cash towards saving the girl child in India
Three friends, Srini Sreeramaneni, Mahesh Kolli and Gautam Nedurumalli, wanted to do something for the country and for sports, so when the idea of the Pro Kabaddi League was shared with them, they jumped at it. The result, — Telugu Titans, the team that represents the two states.
“We had no inkling that this format would become such a hit. When we started the team our only aim was to help revive a sport that has been part of the country for decades now,” says Srini.
The three, who met while they were studying in the US, have been friends for 15 years now. “When Anand Mahindra and Charu Sharma explained the concept of Pro Kabaddi to me I was blown away. Gautam and Mahesh trusted me enough to join the team,” explains Srini, who is the face of the team.
But, it’s not just games for the trio and the team. They take their wins quite seriously. “We have always wanted to do our bit for the society, so sometime back we came up with the idea of taking off girl children from the streets. We collaborated with the NGO, Nanhi Kali. Now for each win of ours, we sponsor three girl children from the NGO,” says Srini, adding, “We tell our players...you’re not playing for us or for yourselves, you’re playing for the girl child...so play well!”
There were reports that the team had shifted base from Vizag to Hyderabad, but Srini is quick to refute. “We haven’t shifted base. We will actually be shuttling between both cities.”
So is their any lucky charm or a ritual that they follow? Srini says, “I really don’t do anything, but Gautam and Mahesh wear the same shirt and jeans to matches they attend. A few of our team members don’t watch the match even though they’re present at the stadium, they stand outside and follow the match.” So does it help? Srini laughs while saying, “Well I guess it has.”
