Third Eamcet counselling needs Supreme Court nod, Telangana to meet
Hyderabad: A third phase of Telangana Eamcet counselling is not being ruled out, but it may have to be held with the Supreme Court’s permission.
The Telangana State Council of Higher Educ-ation (TSCHE) will seek legal opinion on whether it can hold another round of counselling and the state government will hold a meeting on Monday to decide on this.
There have been demands for a third phase of counselling for TS Eamcet after more than 6,000 students couldn’t get seats after the second phase that ended on July 30.
This is even more ironic considering about 26,000 seats are left vacant and more are expected to be vacated since many students might forego their allotted seats. Students couldn’t get seats due to faulty exercise of web options during the counselling.
When asked, TSCHE Chairman Prof. T. Papi Reddy said, “Firstly it is not a fault of the government. But we still want to safeguard the interests of all students, so we will see what we can do.” He added, “We will seek legal opinion because Supreme Court guidelines for admissions are there. We will discuss the issue with the minister on Monday.”
CPI(M) TS Committee member Mr J. Venkatesh said, “Even if these students get seats in spot admissions, they will not be eligible for fee reimbursement. Parents and students are demanding for a third phase to be held.”
The Supreme Court guidelines on engineering admissions, however, mandate that “all the rounds shall be completed before July 30.”Further, students can be admitted before August 15 if any vacancies arise “due to any reason.”
“The seats remaining vacant should again be duly notified and advertised. All seats should be filled positively by 15 August after which there shall be no admission, whatever be the reason or ground,” the SC guidelines say.
