Another panel crashes at Chennai airport

A glass panel measuring around 5 ft X 4 ft attached to the glass wall collapsed

Chennai: The series of panel crash incidents at the Chennai airport is inching towards the 50 mark. The 46th instance of a glass panel crashing occurred during the early hours of Sunday on the third floor of the domestic terminal, which is yet to be fully operational.

According to airport sources, the incident happened after midnight on a floor where the interior design is being finalised to make it the VVIP lounge of the domestic terminal.

A glass panel measuring around 5 ft X 4 ft attached to the glass wall collapsed and fell on the ground. Luckily, no workers or visitors were present at the lounge when the incident happened.

“It is 46th instance of panel / ceiling crash at the renovated airport. The VVIP lounge was not fully operational as the work is still going on. People were not there because usually there will not be any domestic flights operating beyond midnight,” airport sources said.

Since the panel crash series happened the airport, officials initially blamed it on Metro Rail work. Then they said it would take some time for the new false ceilings and glass panels to get properly fixed.

Officials are now hoping that the series of crash incidents should not touch the 50 mark, which would give them a dubious record.
