Kochi: The much-delayed Thammanam-Pullepady road project has finally gained traction with the PWD taking over the project. A meeting chaired by PWD Minister Ebrahim Kunju took the decision in this regard on Saturday.
The first phase of the project will cover 900 metres between Kathrikkadavu and Karanakkodam.
The government has already sanctioned Rs 25 crore for the development of this stretch. The minister had instructed the PWD officials to begin work for the road with the already sanctioned amount.
In 1993-94, 94 residents of the stretch had reached an understanding with the corporation to provide land free of cost for the road.
The expansion will result in the demolition of 20 buildings fully and four partially in the area. The total land required is estimated to be 1.94 acres. The total project cost for the first phase is Rs 38 crore.
The cost included the amount needed for land acquisition and compensation for buildings to be demolished. The cost for the road construction alone is estimated to be Rs 7 crore.
Mr Ebrahim Kunju said that the PWD will initiate steps for land acquisition and other works.
Mayor Tony Chammany said the corporation would soon submit a resolution asking the state government to undertake the project.
A resolution seeking concession to persons who are handing over land for the project free will also be submitted to the government, he added.
The compensation for other land owners will be finalised by the land purchase committee.
