Pastoral letter flays govt stand on Vizhinjam
Thiruvananthapuram: A pastoral criticising the state government for not announcing a rehabilitation package for the fishing community who would lose their dwellings and livelihood for Vizhinjam seaport project will be read out in all churches under Thiruvananthapuram Latin Archdiocese during the holy mass on Sunday.
The letter by Archbishop M. Soosai Pakiam warns that the project would not be allowed to be materialised if it poses a challenge to the coastal inhabitants.
“If the project goes ahead in this manner, it would be impeded at any cost as the livelihood and habitat of over 50,000 fisherpeople living in 32 coastal villages will be affected,” the letter says.
The archbishop said the fishing community would be most affected by the seaport. The construction work is expected to start as per the schedule on November 1.
