Libya kidnap: Assistant Professor Balram had plans to return

Balram had taught in colleges in Hyderabad for 25 years and went to Libya

Hyderabad: Assistant Professor Balram, who was reportedly abducted by Islamic State militants in Libya, had quit his job to come back home and had planned to either resume his job as an academician in city colleges or to restart his own academic institute.

“Last year when he came for a holiday in August he had made up his mind to quit the job in Libya. But the Dean compelled him to go back. Due to the formal contract he had to serve one more year. However, this year he resigned from the job and finished all formalities to leave. He also told me that he will not go back again,” said Sridevi.

Balram had taught in colleges in Hyderabad for 25 years and went to Libya. He also owned an institute in Secunderabad which he had to close down before leaving for Sirte University.

“Though the city he lives in is very peaceful and his life was never affected due to the conflict he had decided to resign. He wanted to spend time here with his wife and kids,” said Balram’s brother-in-law Rangachari.

Ms Sridevi, a mother of two and professor in Economics, is still hopeful that her husband will be released soon by his abductors in Libya.

She was been constantly trying to contact the authorities of Sirte University on the phone to enquire about him. Only two attempts were successful.

“He will call me as soon as they release him. I was in touch with the Sirte University’s English Department Dean Gaddafi. I could talk to him twice, and today there was no response so far,” said Sridevi.
