Cusat plans for Abdul Kalam centre to promote science

Kalam wanted to improve the quality of science education in the state

Kochi: Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam had shown special interest in the ‘Sasthrayaan project’ initiated by V.D. Satheesan MLA to popularise science among students in the state.

Now Vijayakumar Ambat, mathematics professor at Cusat, who is closely associated with the project , says the university plans to set up a ‘Kalam Centre for Science Popularisation’ on its campus as a tribute to the missile man of India.

“It was Kalam who inaugurated the project. He was really happy and wanted more such initiatives to take subjects like science and mathematics to the masses. He even offered to fund the project. Later when he toured the US, he took up the project expansion with five universities there who promised to give a roadmap,” Vijayakumar, who kept in touch with Kalam since 2003, said.

The former President backed to the full the efforts of the professor to come up with “Creative Mathematical Science communications.’

“Kalam wanted to improve the quality of science education in the state. I’ve proposed to the university authorities about the setting up of ‘Kalam Centre,” he said.
