Chennai: Following sudden downpour in Chennai on Friday night, three flights were diverted to Bengaluru and Tiruchy, besides a few others scheduled to take off from Chennai, had to wait for the weather to clear.
Chennai suburbs witnessed heavy rain from Friday midnight to early hours on Saturday making it difficult not only for passengers but also people who work in the late night shifts.
Lufthansa’s flight LH 758 from Frankfurt with 279 passengers was scheduled to land here at 11.50 p.m on Friday, but as the runway experienced heavy wind, air traffic controllers put the aircraft in holding pattern for about 20 minutes. Later, the flight was diverted to Bengaluru.
Similarly, Tiger Airways flight (TR 2636) from Singapore, which was to land in Chennai at 12.45 a.m was also asked to go to Tiruchy as they too had difficulty to land the aircraft here.
An Indigo airline flight from Pune to Chennai too had to fly to Bengaluru due to heavy rain in Chennai.
According to airport officials, the flights were diverted because of heavy rains on the runway and to avoid any risk while the aircraft landed.
The diverted flights landed back in Chennai by about 2.30 am on Saturday and left the city late with waiting passengers.
