Anti-liquor protest hits new high: Mobile tower

Chennai/Salem/Nagercoil: A day after anti- liquor crusader Sasi Perumal died of health complications he developed when climbed up 150 feet high mobile phone tower in Kanyakumari, anti-liquor campaigners across the state found that cellphone towers could attract more attention than protesting in front of Tasmac shops.
The Gandhian’s close friend and former president of the New Labour Union, M.Chandran, went to Sasi Perumal’s native village, Illampillai near Edappadi in Salem district to offer condolences to his family members.
However, he was shocked to see six Tasmac shops doing brisk business there. Immediately, Chandran climbed up a 120 feet high cellphone tower in Illampillai and refused to get down. The Edapadi police rushed to the spot and appealed to him climb down. But Chandran insisted that unless the shops were closed, he would not get down.
So, the shutters were pulled down on all the six Tasmac shops in Illam-pillai. After 30 minutes drama, he got down from the tower. Similarly, a 23-year-old, who also fights against alcohol, created a flutter when he climbed up a cellphone tower in Chidambaram in Cuddalore district early Saturday morning.
Police said that Santhosh Kumar, a BBA graduate and a social activist, climbed up a BSNL tower located near Vandigate at around 5.45 am and started shouting anti-liquor slogans besides blaming authorities for the death of his role model Sasi Perumal.
Despite repeated request from the police team headed by a DSP, San-thosh Kumar refused to get down from the tower, instead he threatened to climb up further to the top of the structure and demanded a promise of total prohibition.
A team of revenue officials requested him to get down from the tower. His mother Selvi too joined the officials at around 9.45 am after which he climbed down.
Meanwhile, Justin Subahar and Rajkumar of Dalit Urimai Iyakkam climbed a mobile phone tower near a private engineering college at Oluginaserry in Nagercoil demanding a compensation of Rs 25 lakh for Sasi Perumal’s family, an enquiry into the death of Sasi Perumal by a sitting high court judge, immediate removal of liquor shops nearby schools, hospitals and places of worship, withdrawal of government’s decision to introduce elite bars and implementation of total prohibition.
Dinaharan, president of Dalit rights movement, came to the rescue of the police and talked to the two, who came down around 6.30 pm.
