13.27 lakh cases pending before trial courts in Kerala
Cases as old as from 1980 are also pending before the high court

Kochi: It has come to light that a total of 13.27 lakh cases are pending before lower courts in the state. Ernakulam district topped the list with close to three lakh cases pending disposal.
The Kerala High Court gave this information in reply to director of Fiat Justicia Adv M L George’s query under Right to Information Act.
At present a total of 2.49 criminal cases are pending before Ernakulam district courts while 40,876 cases civil cases are pending in Thiruvananthapuram district courts which is second in the list.
There are 2,42,182 criminal cases and 17,662 civil cases pending before lower courts in Thiruvananthapuram district.
Cases as old as from 1980 are also pending before the high court. There are 1,564 contempt of court cases pending before the high court. The number of cases reserved for orders are 78.
The number of criminal cases pending before the High Court is 91,0297 while the number of civil cases pending are 42,1261.
At present there are 38 judges at Kerala High Court. There was a proposal to appoint nine more judges but the government is delaying it since a case in this regard is pending before the apex court.
Three high court judges Justice V K Mohanan, Justice T R Ramachandran Nair and Justice A V Ramakrishna Pillai will retire by November this year.
