Salem: A church priest was assaulted by five youth at R. C. Chettipatti near Omalur in Salem district on Friday night. Protesting the attack on the church priest, 54-year- old Arockiya Rayar, church members staged a road roko on the Salem- Bengaluru national highway on Saturday morning.
The protestors demanded the immediate arrest of the five youth who had attacked the church priest.
According to the police, 19-year-old Arulraj of R.C.Chettipatti and his girl friend, Jayanthi of the same village had gone to Yercaud. However, on the way, her dupatta got caught in the wheels of the two-wheeler and she suffered severe injuries.
The priest of the church at R.C.Chettipatti provided funds for Jayanthi’s medical treatment. He also asked Arulraj to help Jayanthi with her medical expenses.
Later on Friday night, furious Arulraj came to the church along with five of his friends and beat up the church priest, Arockiya Rayar.
Demanding the arrest of the five youth, about 100 villagers staged a protest. Following the stir, police arrested Arulraj and have launched a search for his four accomplices.
