‘I always do shows with a social message’

Pooja Gaur, who plays Dr Roshni in Ek Nayi Umeed, talks about the show’s impact on the medical fraternity

In the new show Ek Nayi Umeed, Pooja Gaur plays Roshni, a doctor who has dedicated her life to saving people, whether they can afford to pay the bills or not. And she says that she’s loving it. Asked whether the show will be along the lines of the popular Grey’s Anatomy, she says, “It will not at all be like Grey’s Anatomy. It will have a fresh feel with tales connecting to the patient as well the doctor’s family etc. This kind of a show has never been aired nationally or internationally… I am sure there will be a few messages too, which will prove helpful to both patients as well as doctors.”

She adds, “It is not about doctors’ romances but will depict the problems that the medicos’ families as well the patients face and also solutions to such problems. We usually do not care about the lives of doctors and their families. We feel it’s their duty to look after us at any given hour… forgetting even to thank them for their services. The show also showcases the struggle, problems and the pros and cons and the complicated situations that doctors face on a daily basis.”
Pooja says that the show will also have messages regarding what to do in different medical situations, which is the main focus.

And she is happy to be part of Ek Nayi Umeed, which is different from the regular saas-bahu serials. “Doing a show with a different content on a daily basis makes me happy. Also, I feel lucky for being chosen for Roshni’s character,” she adds. “As the show progresses, it will be relatable to one and all. I do not know whether the show is inspired by real incidents but it may be so. The medical industry as well the patients will definitely relate to the show.”

“I have always been associated with shows that tackle social issues,” Pooja says, adding, “My show Pratigya too was about a girl who always stood up for her rights... I like to perform characters that are slightly out of the box. I am not attracted to normal, romantic kind of characters. I like portraying characters that give some message to the society and is able to make this a better place for people to live in.”

About hosting Savdhaan India, she says, “In Savdhaan… I made women realise their rights. They should stand up and fight for their rights. Our laws are very powerful and everyone should know the importance of availing their rights.”

She adds that Savdhaan… touched her profoundly. “I was totally depressed after a episodes. At one point of time I told the makers to give me only a few episodes as a negative feeling was sinking within me. But after some time I came out of the impact of these shocking incidents that were portrayed… Touch wood, I have not been a victim of any such gruesome incidents.”

About her personal life, Pooja says, “I am not single. I am committed to my boyfriend Raj Singh Arora, but no marriage plans for the next three years. I am enjoying my professional stint and I am also very young to get married. I want to continue working and I do not have any plans of taking a break.”
