4 telecom firms submit call data, 2 seek time
The evidence would be handed over to the Supreme Court
Vijayawada: Following orders of the Supreme Court and the Hyderabad High Court, four telecom service providers — Airtel, Idea, BSNL and Reliance on Friday submitted the call data of around 25 mobile phones to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court in sealed covers.
The call data is considered vital evidence for the Special Investigation Team of AP probing the alleged phone tapping cases registered across the state against Telangana government and officials. The evidence would be handed over to the Supreme Court.
While BSNL provided call data of five mobile numbers, Airtel, Idea and Reliance submitted details of another 20 mobile numbers. However, representatives of Vodafone and Tata Docomo appeared before the court and sought two weeks time to submit the call data of other phone numbers, saying that they were initially not asked to submit the on Friday. The court granted permission and asked the two service providers and others to submit required data by August 14.
Meanwhile, TD legal cell president K. Ravindra Kumar said that Indian Telegraph Act falls under the jurisdiction of the Centre and TS does not have any right to tap mobile phones.
