Turmoil to end at Nimhans? New director takes over
Those working in Nimhans are looking forward to peace
Bengaluru: The turmoil at Nimhans looked likely to end as the new director-in charge, who was appointed on Friday, gave every indication of a smooth transition. The controversy-laced month of Dr N Pradhan’s tenure as the previous director-in charge of National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans), was marked by bitterness, resentment and insecurity. But now after all the summary sackings, those working there are looking forward to some peace and a tranquil atmosphere.
Dr Pradhan’s term ended on Friday. The Union Health Ministry appointed Dr G S Uma Maheshwara Rao to take charge of Nimhans as the director in-charge from Friday. This seniormost professor after Pradhan has spent thirty-three years with Nimhans.
Says the newly-appointed director-in-charge: “I joined Nimhans in 1982 as a senior resident and since then have been with the Institute, growing along with it step by step.” The order came from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, stating that Dr Uma Maheshwara Rao, the seniormost professor will take charge as director till a regular director is appointed.
According to professors, that procedure might take more than a month. Dr Uma Maheswara Rao who is the senior professor at the Department of Neuro Anaesthesia, was the dean of neurosciences and has some 120 international research publications to his name.
Speaking about his current role after an uneasy one month for the faculty at Nimhans, Dr Rao says, “I must confess that I will be there for a short time, as this role is temporary until the centre decides on a regular director, but my main goal would be to ensure things run smoothly at Nimhans just as they have been running. I will just ensure that nothing blots the Institute’s prestige or tarnishes its reputation.”
