Pay-and-park on 52 roads in CBD areas
BBMP has called for tenders for the project to be launched in Sept
Bengaluru: Be ready to shell out for on-street parking from September onwards at a few stretches of the Central Business District (CBD) areas. The BBMP has called for tenders and initially 52 roads will be included. In fact, the BBMP had called for tenders for the project almost six months ago but there were merely three bidders who did not even qualify. Thus, the corporation has once again called for tenders and they will be implemented after the elections.
Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) had suggested the pay-and-park system. They divided the city into three zones with the CBD as A zone and each of these areas was to have different parking fees for on-street and off-street parking with stricter restrictions on parking time.
Subsequently the BBMP gave its nod and called for the tenders. The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) Head Manjula says, “We have suggested that the BBMP take up pay-and-park in the city to reduce the traffic mess and wrong parking. They are on the job.”
Basavraj Kabade, BBMP executive engineer (traffic engineering cell) said, “The last date of submission is August 17. We will not go ahead with the evaluation and finalization process as of now as the code of conduct is on due to the elections. We will start the evaluation process after the elections and from September we will execute the project.”
However, Traffic expert M N Sreehari says, “Roads are for traffic to flow smoothly and not for parking. None of the developed countries allow vehicles to be parked on the road.”
