Most mishaps during evening peak hour on Kerala roads

An alarmingly high number of victims who meet with accidents between 5am and 6pm die of injuries

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Though early morning accidents are most lethal, statistics reveal that evening peak hours kill more motorists and cause most mishaps on Kerala roads as people rush home after work.

In 2014, most mishaps occurred during the one hour between6pm and 7pm during which 341 people were killed in 2665 accidents. In 2013 also, most number of people were killed during this timeframe. The next most accident prone hour was between 2pm and 3pm, during which 282 people were killed in 2613 accidents.

More than one third of all the accidents and one fourth of all deaths happened in the state during the five hours between2pm and 7pm.

“The general notion is that people are alert at noon and evening and they sleep in the early hours of the morning. However, people tend to be very restless in the evening and accidents continue to be high until 8pm. On the other hand, accidents at night turn more lethal for victims because they go unattended and they may not reach a hospital before the golden hour,” a police circle inspector said.

Traditionally, an alarmingly high number of victims who meet with accidents between 5am and 6pm die of injuries. This year also 117 were killed and 775 people were injured in just 717 accident cases across the state.
