The AIADMK government has also declared state mourning for seven days
Chennai: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Friday announced that the state would commemorate former President APJ Abdul Kalam’s birthday, which falls on October 15, as “Youth Renaissance Day.” A ‘Dr Kalam’ award to recognise and honour achievers in promoting scientific growth, humanities and students welfare in the state would be given away on Independence Day, Jayalalithaa said in a statement.
Kalam’s, hard work, dedication, humble and humane approach not only made him popular among masses, but he had also been a great source of inspiration to students and youngsters. Besides being a scientist, he also had a vision for the country and wanted India to be a superpower by 2020, she said.
Pointing out that Abdul Kalam always wanted to remain a teacher, she termed Kalam as a driving force behind the growth of youth. Recalling his contributions towards India’s growth, she noted Kalam as a “Missile man with multi-faceted personality”, who rose from a humble family.
The award, comprising gold medal, Rs 5 lakh and a citation, would be presented to a person hailing from the state from the current year, she said. Her government had also declared last Thursday as a holiday when Dr Kalam was laid to rest in Peikarumbu at Rameswaram.
