Government Law College in Ernakulam closed after clash over Yakub Memon hanging
KOCHI: The Government Law College in Ernakulam will be closed on Monday and Tuesday following skirmishes between students ostensibly in the wake of protests against the hanging Yakub Memon.
The college principal, however, has not given any reason for declaring the holiday. The problem started on Thursday as a group students allegedly belonging to the pro-IUML MSF put up posters against the hanging of Memon in the name of Lawcoz, a common platform of the college. Students belonging to the SFI, KSU and ABVP objected to using the name of Lawcoz leading to a ruckus between the rivals.
The MSF was trying to give a communal angle to the hanging of Memon by pasting provocative slogans, said Amal, an SFI leader. “It was not right on the part of MSF to misuse the common platform of the college,” he said.
The MSF leaders said the intolerance of SFI and its practice of denying freedom to other students’ organisations to function on the campuses had led to the problem.
KSU Ernakulam district secretary Tito Antony said attempts to create trouble on sensitive issues should be condemned by all sections of students.
