Amma Cement sales soar in Vellore district

The TN Cements Corporation procures two lakhs tonnes of cement bags from private cement manufacturers
Vellore: The 'Amma Cement' Plan introduced by the ruling AIADMK government Has, till July 28 in Vellore district seen a record sale of 17,890 tonnes, benefitting 6958 persons.
According to the Tamil Nadu Cements Corporation, a bag of cement is being sold at a cost of Rs 190, when the cement bags were sold at a cost of Rs 350 to Rs 450 per bag in the open market. In the district around 14 sales depots were functioning under the control of District Rural Development Agency. The cement bags were sold in all the 20 blocks.
According to the district collector Dr R.Nanthagopal, under the 'Amma Cement Plan' cement bags worth Rs 14.02 crore were sold with the total sales of 36.903 tonnes worth bags.
He further added that besides the cement sold in 20 blocks, the bags were sold through the TN Consumer Marketing Federation, the nine cement-selling centers.
They had sold around 19,032 tonnes of cement to 3602 persons who could not afford to construct house, due to the high cost in the cement bags in open market.
The TN Cements Corporation procures two lakhs tonnes of cement bags from private cement manufacturers and had been storing in 470 government godowns in the state, says the Collector.
A person, who comes from the middle-income family or lower-income family, can construct his house by using 50 bags for every 100 sq. ft. of his construction, thus reducing his construction costs. Had he been asked to go to the open market, the cost of construction would be doubled.
Says Malathi, wife of Radhakrishnan and resident of Vanjur Panchayat in Katpadi said that very recently she had converted her hut comprising 800 sq. ft into a pucca dwelling. She said initially thought that to construct her house was a daydream, but after the Amma Cement Plan came into implementation, she could build the house.
