26 lakh Tuberculosis cases in India as per WHO

India ranks 14th among 22 high TB burden countries globally
Visakhapatnam: India has around, 2.6 million suffering with Tuberculosis (TB) as per the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s Global TB Report 2014, said union health minister J.P. Nadda, in a written reply to an un-starred question by Anakapalle MP Muttamsetti Srinivas Rao in Parliament here on Friday.
Nadda further said that Multi Drug Resistant (MDR) TB cases are around 61,000. However, on the basis of prevalence rate, India ranks 14th among 22 high TB burden countries globally.
Due, to the large population of our country, the same translates into the large number of cases. It is likely that with a large private sector of health care in India, a significant proportion of cases not registered under Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) were diagnosed and treated in private sector.
TB notification has been made mandatory through a government order issued on May 7, 2012. By the said order, all the healthcare providers are to notify every TB case diagnosed or treated to local authorities designated for this purpose.
An online case-based web-based software , Nikshay, has been developed by the government to facilitate TB notification. Under RNTCP, funds made available from 2012 to 2016 are Rs 2,263 crore and are enough for meeting the programme, Mr Nadda added.
