‘Disappointed’ Owaisi sticks to his stand
Hyderabad: Terming that the order of the Supreme Court refusing to stay the execution of Yakub Memon is a huge disappointment, AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday said here that the capital punishment was given to the Mumbai attack accused because he had no political backing.
Interacting with media persons after the decision of the Supreme Court, he said that order is a huge disappointment and setback because after more than 8 to 9 judges of not only Supreme Court but High Court have stated Yakub should be given capital punishment.
He said, “if capital punishment given by the courts of law can bring closure to the innocent victims of bomb blasts then I demand that capital punishment should also to be given to original sin that is destruction and demolition of Babri Masjid and unfortunately the capital punishment is not yet given.”
Maintaining that he stands by the statement of Yakub has lacking of political backing, the MP said Yakub got capital punishment because the then Congress government led by Prime Minister Narasimha Rao deceived him and there was no political backing for him as was for the convict in Rajiv Gandhi and former Punjab CM Beant Singh assassination cases.
He said “it is for everyone to learn how the Akali Dal saved the killer of Beant Singh, how both the Tamilian parties have saved the killers of Rajiv Gandhi”.
He also criticised Maharashtra police for only calling Muslim leaders and telling them to cooperate. He said “co-operation is to be given by each and every segment of the society irrespective of which religion and political affiliation he belongs to. I hope and pray that peace would prevail.”
