Yakub Memon’s family not to get his body, security beefed up
Mumbai: The body of Yakub Memon, who will be executed on July 30, will not be handed over to his family. The jail superintendent has stated law and order concerns as the reason to not hand over the body. As per the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court after the controversy over Afzal Guru, the convict in the Parliament attack case, the state government has to hand over the body of the executed prisoner to the family.
However, it also gives power to the jail superintendent to take a call on the matter in case he believes handing over of the body could result in a law and order situation. Security in Mumbai has been beefed up in the wake of Yakub’s expected execution on Thursday. Around 35,000 cops will guard the city after Yakub Memon is hanged at Nagpur’s Central Prison.
Maharashtra Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had also earlier said that though the government wanted to hand over the body, the final decision would be taken by the jailer. “In such cases, the jailer has to take the final decision based on circumstances,” Mr Fadnavis had said. Last time, the Maharashtra government had executed 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab, whose body was disposed of at an unknown location.
