New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has called an all-party meeting on Thursday to find ways to stop the practice of Opposition members trooping into the Well with placards. It also follows Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Choudhary banging his placard on Speaker’s table, after which he was suspended for a day.
The Speaker’s meeting is unlikely to discuss ways to end the Parliament deadlcok as this falls in the government’s domain. The Speaker, sources said, will elicit members’ views on how to ensure that the rules of business are adhered to.
After Mr Choudhary banged his placard, Ms Mahajan had told top Congress leaders in the House that they didn’t do anything to stop such unruly behaviour. While the proceedings of the first week of the Monsoon Session were washed out, the Speaker managed to run the business of the House on Monday despite the ruckus by the Congress, AAP, NCP and Left MPs.
Several non-UPA parties, including the Trinamul, did not join in the ruckus. The Speaker had warned agitating Congress MPs that she would initiate disciplinary action if placards were not stopped being displayed in the House, and has earned a reputation of sticking to the rules.
Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has made it clear she wouldn’t stop the House functioning even if Opposition MPs stayed in the Well the entire day shouting slogans. She had said she always provided “adequate” opportunity to all sections of the House to raise matters of topical interest and hoped that all members would adhere to the set norms of etiquette and standards of behaviour. However, Congress members are protesting over alleged blackout of Opposition protests.
