At sea over Dr Kalam’s death: Rameswaram on mode mourning
Kalam’s family and friends yet to reconcile to sudden death of their son of soil
Rameswaram: Even before dawn broke on the fishing hamlets of Rameswaram, fishermen and religious heads of Rameswaram gathered in front of Dr Kalam’s native house on Pallivasal street.
The religious heads of dargahs, temples and churches came together to share their grief of passing away of Rameswaram’s son of the soil. Students of Mandapam Panchayat Union School, where Kalam had his primary education, took out a silent rally remembering the missile man.

The 83-year-old Batchi Venkatasubramania Sastri, a school friend of Kalam was inconsolable. “He is not going to come back, where will I find a friend like him? Despite holding the highest office in the country, he was simple. His affinity for Rameswaram is something that can’t be explained,” he said.
Earlier in the day, the fishermen in Rameswaram convened and decided not to venture into the sea till Thursday. “Rameswaram has lost its son and we will not venture into sea till his last rites are performed,” said A. Alwyn, president, Rameswaram Fishermen Association..
Local officials said the district administration is expecting more than one lakh people to assemble for his last rites.
