More than Rs 7,000 was collected in fines from these eateries and small shops for violating food safety norms

KOCHI: As part of the Operation Ruchi, the district food safety authorities conducted raids on wayside eateries selling north Indian delicacies like pav bhaji and chaat.

The closure notice was served on three units at Kathrikadavu near Kaloor preparing the north Indian snacks under very unhygienic conditions.

“These units have been supplying snacks to the wayside eateries in many parts of the city. They pose serious health threats as many people used to eat from wayside carts. Awareness has to be created on hazards of such stuff,” said K.V. Shibu, district food safety officer.

During the raids, more than Rs 7,000 was collected in fines from these eateries and small shops for violating food safety norms.

Three squads conducted inspections in Mulanthuruthy, Chottanikkara, Kathrikadavu, Thammanam and the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium premises in Kadavanthra.

“Being small scale traders, inspections carried out on the wayside carts selling north Indian delicacies were not strict and regular. However, considering the poor sanitation a-nd health hazards, regular raids will be conducted. The wayside eateries are the riskiest considering their poor hygiene standards,” added the official.
