Food poisoning deaths: Viscera test to be done

Police said the possibility of a suicide is highly unlikely as there seems to be no enmity, personal or in business
Chennai: The Seven Wells police here will send the internal organs of the four members of the family who died of a suspected food poisoning for a viscera test to establish the presence of poison.
Preliminary results of the post-mortem conducted have confirmed the presence of poisonous substances in their body, but a viscera test is needed to establish the same, police said. The bodies were handed over to the family members after autopsy at the government Stanley Hospital on Tuesday.
“While the presence of poisonous substances in the body has been established, it is still not clear if they died of food poisoning or consumed poison directly. We have to wait for the viscera tests which will take another 10 days,” V.Adhimoolam, inspector, Seven Wells said.
Four persons of the same family – Nandakumar (58), his wife Kalaivani (52), son Purushothaman alias Vinod (30) and their relative Lalitha (65) died at a private hospital near their residence on Vengu street, Kondithope on Monday in a span of six hours after they complained of health complications.
Police investigation revealed that the family members fell sick after they consumed food (idly and dosa) made from the same batter on Saturday night and on Sunday morning. “We have recovered the batter and will be sending it for tests too along with the organs,” said a police officer.
Police said the possibility of a suicide is highly unlikely as there seems to be no enmity, personal or in business. Nandakumar lived in a joint family with his brother Sundaramoorthy and they ran a wholesale cosmetics business. “However, we will initiate enquiries with the family members in the coming days,” an investigating officer said.
