Chennai: Six Opposition parties, including Left, MDMK and VCK, have joined hands to oppose the “anti people policies” of the AIADMK government at the state and of the BJP government at the Centre.
The combine will hold rallies and demonstration on August 13 in Chennai, Thanjavur, Madurai, Tirunelveli and Erode. After holding a consultation meeting here, CPI (M) State secretary G. Ramakrishnan announced that six parties including MMK and Gandhiya Makkal Iyakkam had come together under the banner of Joint Movement for Protection of People’s Welfare to take up issues concerning the public.
The meeting was attended by CPI State secretary R. Mutharasan, MDMK general secretary Vaiko, VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan and MMK president M. H. Jawahirullah. However, Ramakrishnan dismissed any talks of the combine emerging into an electoral alliance as too early.
“We have come together to discuss problems faced by the people. We did not discuss about election as it is too early,” he said.
But Vaiko insisted that the combine would continue to fight against the AIADMK and BJP governments. When asked whether the DMK would join this combine, the marxist leader replied in negative. However, he said they would want DMDK and TMC to join with them.
The August 13 demonstration would be held seeking action on 15-point charter of demands including resignation of Union Ministers and BJP chief ministers who were facing charges of corruption, withdrawal of amendments to land acquisition Bill and the Child Labour Act, take action against Sangh Parivar for inciting communal violence and formation of Cauvery Management Board as per the final orders of the tribu
nal.
As far as Tamil Nadu was concerned, they demanded passing of Lokayukta Act to check widespread corruption, a special law to stop to honour killings, opposing ONGC’s Methane extraction project in Cauvery delta districts and demanding the state government to implead itself in the case of killing of 20 Tamils by Andhra Pradesh in the Simhachalam forests and to seek a CBI probe into it.
They also wanted the President to commute the death sentence of Yakub Memon, the lone death row convict in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.
