Salem: 43-year-old woman pleads for euthanasia
The hospital had diagnosed a tumour in her uterus and had advised surgical removal of the uterus
Salem: A 43-year-old woman, who claimed to be suffering from severe stomachache because of faulty medical treatment, gave a desperate plea to the district collector to take her own life.
The woman, Shanthi, wife of a labourer belonging to Bhajanai Mada street, had been undergoing treatment for stomach ache at the hospital where she was working in 2006.
The hospital had diagnosed a tumour in her uterus and had advised surgical removal of the uterus. “However, along with the uterus, the surgeons had removed the ovaries too without obtaining prior approval from me,” she said.
Shanthi had moved the Madras High Court which directed the Joint Director of Medical Health department to investigate into the issue and submit a report in 2014.
However, the Health department official gave a report favourable to the hospital. “Even after the surgery, I continue to suffer from giddiness, stomachache and nausea.” Unable to bear the intense pain, she had attempted suicide at the Collectorate on July 13. “The Collector should give permission for put an end to my agony by mercy killing,” she pleaded.
When contacted, the district collector, V. Sampath said that he was in Chennai on official work. He said he would order the officials to provide proper medical treatment for the lady.
