Visakhapatnam: Onions bring tears to common man
Onions are the most costly vegetable at Rythu Bazaars and open markets in Vizag
Visakhapatnam: Onions, which have been burning a hole in the pockets of consumers in Vizag for past few days, will continue to be so for next one month. While the traders and officials of the horticulture department blame dry weat-her due to weak monsoon in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh for rise in onion prices, the price of the onions would further increase in the coming days due to shortage of supply from other states.
Onions are the most costly vegetable at Rythu Bazaars and open markets in the city. Onion are being sold at Rs 34-a-kg in Rythu Bazaars, while in open markets it costs Rs 40 to Rs 45 per kg depending on its quality.
Vizag imports onions mostly from Maharashtra and Gujarat, while sometimes from parts of Karnataka and Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh. .
Assistant director marketing (Rythu Bazaars) B. Ravi Kumar said that usually, the everyday demand for onions in Vizag is around 20 to 25 tonnes.
But, currently the supply is 12 to 15 tonnes only and the substantial drop in the supply is the major cause for the onion prices reaching an all-time high.
Mr Ravi Kumar attributed that the price of onions was expected to further shoot up at Rythu Bazaars in the coming weeks and stabilise when the new crop arrives from parts of Karnataka, Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
