Traders of Rythu Bazaar say that they are forced to sell for higher prices due to less supply
Vijayawada: A kilogram of Onions is being sold for whopping Rs 30 in Rythu Bazaars of Vijayawada and Krishna district due to shortage of supply.
For the past few days, prices of the onions rose up by more than 50 percent and consumers are forced to spend more than Rs 35 per kilogram to buy onions from open market.
Traders of Rythu Bazaar say that they are forced to sell for higher prices due to less supply. A week ago onions were being sold at
Rs
25 and it reached Rs 30 on July 25.
Traders say the price of onions would be increased further in the coming weeks. There is a shortage of onion supply from Thulluru and near by villages and this too is a reason higher prices.
Onion fields spread in 5000 hectares across Penumaka, Undavalli, Venkatapalem, Krishnayapalem villages of the capital region used to supply Onions to Vijayawada and nearby areas and export to Bengaluru.
The annual production used to be between 75, 000 tonnes to 1 lakh tonnes per year. Since there is very little supply from villagers of capital region onion traders are forced to import the produce from Karnataka and other onion producing regions.
