A 53-year-old farmer committed suicide by consuming poison

TUMAKURU: Nothing seems to be going right for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah when it comes to tackling farmer suicides. On Sunday, nine farmers including a debt-ridden couple committed suicide across the state making a mockery of the appeals made to them not to resort to the extreme step.
The couple have been identified as 35-years-old Srinivas and his 28-year-old wife Kalavati, residents of Talekere in Turuvekere taluk of Tumakuru district. Srinivas committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in his agricultural field. Kalavati saw the body of her husband hanging and committed suicide by hanging from the same tree. It is said that they had taken a loan of Rs 60,000 from Kalpataru Grameena Bank and Rs 40,000 from various Self-Help Groups. They own 3.10 acres of agricultural land but the loss of crop and the pressure from money lenders forced them to kill themselves, said sources.
A 53-year-old farmer committed suicide by consuming poison in Gandarajapura village in Doddaballapur taluk of Bengaluru Rural district Sunday morning. The farmer had taken Rs 3.8 lakh loan from various banks and private moneylenders to cultivate grapes. His vineyard developed in 3 acres of land, was damaged in the recent storm.
Three debt-ridden farmers committed suicide in Gadag and Haveri districts on Sunday. Sixty-five-year-old Siddaramappa Handi ended his life by jumping into a lake in Jigalur village of Ron taluk in Gadag district. He had lost the maize and cotton crop grown in 2.5 acres due to failure of the monsoon. He has taken Rs 3 lakh loan from co-operative banks and money lenders. He had also borrowed Rs 1 lakh from SBI.
Farmer Ravindra Koppad (45) committed suicide by consuming poison in Petalur village of Mundaragi taluk. He had taken Rs 3 lakh loan from Karnataka Central Co-operative Bank and Rs 1 lakh from Karnataka Vikas Bank. He has grown cotton and sunflower but the crop dried up due to the failure of the monsoon. Another farmer, Prabhu Kariyannavar also ended his life in Chikkayadachi village of Hirekerur taluk, Haveri district as he was depressed over loss of crop. He had taken Rs 3 lakh loan from banks, private moneylenders and women self-help groups.
A 36-year-old farmer from Gunda village in Sindhanur taluk committed suicide by consuming poison Sunday afternoon. Hanumanth Mudukappa, who owned three acres and three guntas, had taken a loan of Rs 40,000 from Vyavasaaya Seva Sangha and Rs 4 lakh from private moneylenders. He is the fourth farmer to kill himself in the taluk.
Meanwhile, two more farmers committed suicide in Mandya district on Sunday. A 50-year-old farmer reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself, in Hulivaahana village in Mandya. He had 18 guntas of land and had cultivated sugarcane. He had borrowed Rs 2 lakh loan including a gold loan of Rs 60,000 from a co-operative society. Overburdened by loans, he took the extreme step, police said.
A 37-year-old farmer committed suicide by hanging himself at Konasaale in Basraal police station limits in Mandya district. Ramesh is survived by his wife and two children. He had 30 guntas of land and was involved in sericulture. According to complaint filed by his father, he had taken a loan of Rs 1 lakh.
