Parties in slugfest over veil controversy
Thiruvananthapuram: The CBSE’s decision to enforce the dress code at the All-India Pre-Medical Entrance Test (AIPMT) halls and turn away a nun for wearing the headgear here on Saturday has kicked up a row with various political parties taking different stands on the issue.
IUML national secretary E. T. Mohammed Basheer and KPCC president V. M. Sudheeran came out against turning away the students who wore headgears in the examination halls.
However, BJP state president V. Muraleedharan welcomed the decision to impose the restriction.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy refused to comment on the issue.
Mr Sudheeran termed the decision of the authorities not to allow the nun to write the examination as “unfortunate”.
"The decision was against the Constitution which allowed citizens to preserve their faith and follow religious practices," he said in a statement here on Sunday.
The chief minister said he would react after studying the issue as he could not react on something unknown to him.
Mr Mohammed Basheer questioned the Supreme Court’s directions on banning hijab and veil during the AIPMT and termed the observations made by the court as “not right”.
“This is a matter of faith and the Supreme Court cannot simply pass such observations as the court’s stand would become part of the law,” he said.
However, BJP state president Muraleedharan who blasted the Muslim League on the issue said that those who were not ready to accept the Supreme Court verdict should examine whether they were eligible to continue as Indian citizens as they were committing treason. “This is like challenging the law,” Mr Muraleedharan said.
