Mumbai pub girl turns away 3 for being ‘Indian’

Police have registered a case against Natasha, who is said to be a foreign national

Mumbai: Three persons were turned away by Trilogy pub of Sea Princess Hotel near Juhu Beach in Santa Cruz (west) in the early hours of Sunday allegedly because they were “Indians” and were “not fit” to enter the pub.

The Santa Cruz police, on receiving a complaint, have booked a woman who works at the pub and is said to be a foreign national. According to complaint, Shanu Malik and his fiancée Jennifer Chavan went to the pub at around 2.30 am with another friend Dharmesh Thakkar. It was Mr Malik’s birthday and the couple decided to celebrate it at Trilogy.

However, they were in for a rude shock when hostess Natasha did not let them in by giving them a stunning reply.

“She told my fiancée that we would not be allowed to enter because we are Indians. Refusing entry for some reason is fine, but she said we would not be allowed in because of our nationality,” said Ms Chavan, a resident of Bandra.

“She went on to say that we were not desirable and fit to enter. She misbehaved with my fiancée, and so we approached the police. We do not have any complaint against Trilogy pub, but we have lodged a case against Natasha,” added Ms Chavan, who works as a freelance event manager.

The Santa Cruz police has registered a case against Natasha, who is said to be a foreign national. She has been booked under Section 4 of the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955, which deals with punishment for enforcing social disabilities, including access to public shop, restaurant, hotel or place of public entertainment.

The police on Sunday went to the pub to find out if the CCTV cameras had captured the incident. They have recorded the statements of a few staffers and the three aggrieved persons, including Ms Chavan.

When Sea Princess was contacted on their landline, the receptionist said, “The management at Triology is different. The property is rented out to them. They will be available only on Wednesday. We are not concerned with them.”

Deccan Chroncile tried to contact the Triology pub on its landline number, but it wasn’t available. Their website states they reserve the right to modify or update the Club Rules and Regulations. The Club Rules are governed by the laws of the State of Maharashtra without regard to the conflicts of laws rules of any jurisdiction, says the website.
