Kerala Water Authority lock horns with Reliance Co

4G cable laying works hit sewage lines

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is on a warpath with Reliance Communications over 4G cable laying in the city which has taken a heavy toll on its sewage lines.

Recently, the Reliance laid optical fibre cables damaging the sewage lines at Vazhuthacaud. When the contractor refused to compensate, the KWA’s drainage wing lodged a complaint with the Museum Police.

“The cables are laid using trenchless technology and around four fibre went inside the drainage, bursting the lines and causing huge inconvenience to the residents and the public,” city corporation councillor Suresh Kumar said.

“We asked them to fix the lines which got damaged because of their work but they refused to do it and we approached the police. Four days have passed since the burst”.

The residents are agitated and the Museum police on Saturday called both the parties to the police station.

“After negotiations for several hours, they agreed to do the work. The residents are at the receiving end and we took up the matter on the very first day. But after police intervention only they agreed to do the work,” he said.

“They are laying the cables without proper planning. There is nobody to question them and they are ruining the public utilities”.

There have been widespread complaints regarding the way it was laying the cables as the entire road network in the stretch has been cut open.
