Hot July burns out kids in Telangana

Paediatricians say the that hot weather demands that parents tell their children to drink water frequently

Hyderabad: Excessive heat has led to severe cases of dehydration in the last one week, especially among children.

Over 100 cases have been reported in both, private and public children’s hospitals as parents got in children with symptoms of high grade fever accompanied with dehydration.

There have also been symptoms of vomiting and severe loss of fluid. Dr T.P.J. Karthik, senior paediatrician, said, “The whole day the temperatures are high and it peaks in the afternoon.

This is when children in playschools leave for home and the middle and lower school children leave by afternoon for home. Those who are not drinking water properly in school tend to suffer from dehydration which escalates into high-grade fever.”

Paediatricians say the that hot weather demands that parents tell their children to drink water frequently.

Paediatrician Dr S. Srikrishna said, “Some children are so involved in their games or studies that although they are thirsty, they do not drink water. They need to be reminded. It is important that parents are pro-active and counsel the child that the heat is severe and they must drink water at regular intervals.”

The cases coming in private clinics show that students are not having water for three to four hours at a stretch and then they tend to fall ill.
