Mumbai: Ajmal Kasab’s hangman from Yerawada prison in Pune, a constable from the same jail, reached Nagpur’s Central Prison two days ago, indicating that he may be the same hangman for Yakub Memon on July 30.
According to reliable sources in the prisons department, the constable (identity withheld for security reasons), who is nicknamed “Babu Jallad”, is overseeing the preparations and rehearsals of the gallows with a dummy replicating Yakub’s weight and body.
The constable reached Nagpur on Friday morning and was taken to the temporary structure where the execution is expected to take place. Around a week ago, the state prisons department, led by ADG Meeran Borwankar, selected three other constables from the Central Prison to carry out the execution.
These three others from then onwards have been engaged in supervising the maintenance of the gallows and coordinating with PWD officials who are constructing the special shed where Memon is to be hanged. Officials, however, did not confirm if “Babu Jallad” has been finalised as the hangman or whether he will only supervise.
