Rajamahendravaram: Hundreds of passengers escaped miraculously when one of the coaches of a passenger train bound to Vijayawada from Visakhapatnam broke in the middle causing panic among them at Ungutur in West Godavari in the early hours on Saturday.
The Pushkaralu special train started in Visakhapatnam on Friday evening and arrived at Ungutur railway station ferrying a large number pilgrims.
As the train started from the station after halting for a while, a coach positioned in third place from the engine broke in the middle with a thumping sound. As the vacuum pipe also broke off, the train was halted suddenly.
The panic-stricken passengers from the broken coach jumped out of the train while passengers in other coaches also alighted the train fearing trouble. The driver of the train noticed another train coming in the opposite direction and signalled the driver to stop it.
This saved several passengers who were on the railway track after jumping out from the stranded train.
