Tamil Nadu: Fall in prices of vegetables
Chennai: Showers across parts of the state and regions of North India have led to a fall in the prices of vegetables and potatoes by over 25-30 per cent over the past one month.
The primary reason for this decline in prices is the bumper vegetable production in districts such as Tiruvannamalai, Ooty, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram districts, and the production of potatoes in places like Kanpur, Agra and Varanasi, retailers and wholesale traders said.
“Good showers in five to six districts in Tamil Nadu and in certain districts in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have increased the flow of vegetables that has led to the decrease in prices,” said V.R. Soundarajan, vegetable trader and a member of the Koyambedu market committee.
However, prices of tomatoes, green chillies and ginger remained unchanged during the one-month period. The small dip in prices of vegetables came as a relief to buyers and they hoped the declining trend would continue in the months ahead.
“We hope the trend continues in the months to come as rainfall has improved during the past one week,” said M. Susheela, a home maker at Ashok Nagar. Weather department’s forecast about rains augurs well too, she said.
