Stringent action against waste disposal on roadsides in Kerala

The issue of bad roads too came up for discussions

Kochi: Strict action will be taken against those disposing of wastes along roadsides, especially at deserted stretches under the cover of darkness, the district development meet decided on Saturday.

“It has come to notice that tankers are used to dispose even manual waste during nights at deserted places. Cops have been directed to seize these vehicles and book the offenders under sec 107. Also, fines will be levied for causing harm to public health,” collector M.G. Rajamanickam said.

The issue of street dog menace was also deliberated. “Waste disposal is a major factor for the rise in population of street dogs. The local self-government institutions have failed in waste management or in creating proper awareness,” he pointed out.

The issue of bad roads too came up for discussions. The collector criticised that various agencies have no co-ordination and often the Kerala Water Authority digs up stretches where the tarring works were done only a few days ago.

He especially pointed out the deteriorated condition of the road to the Infopark. The regional transport officer told the meet that the possibility of extending some of the bus services from Kakkanad to Infopark was being explored.

Meanwhile, chief secretary Jiji Thomson said the encroachment on Infopark premises wouldn’t be allowed at any cost.

“We’ve also directed to repair the roads to the Infopark on a war footing.” he said during a review meet held at the collectorate.
