Nellore: Farmers staged a dharna and burnt tobacco stocks to register their protest in Kaligiri of Nellore district on Saturday in the backdrop of falling of tobacco prices from Rs 130 per kg to Rs 100.
In some auction platforms, the buyers are not coming forward to purchase tobacco. Union minister Nirmala Sita-raman, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in separate meetings warned that they would take stern action, if the buyers fail to offer MSP fixed by the traders.
Board chairman, Dr K. Gopal conducted a meeting with tobacco companies and buyers and sought their co-operation. In spite of it, there is no change in the situation. The farmers said that they are not in a position to clear debts due to delay in purchase of tobacco. They warn-ed that if the government did not respond, they would intensify th-eir stir. Later, they burnt tobacco stocks on the highway in Kaligiri and DC Palli to register their protest.
