30 per cent lawyers fake: Bar Council chief
Chennai: Bar Council of India chairman Manan Kumar Mishra on Saturday said 30 per cent of all lawyers in India possessed fraudulent law degrees and 20 per cent just wore lawyers’ robes without proper degree. Disclosing this at a lawyers meet organised by BCI here, Mishra said the BCI, statutorily empowered to discipline errant lawyers and take action against them, was in the process of weeding them out.
Manan Kumar Mishra said to shut these ‘rogue elements’ the statutory body had introduced All India Bar Examination and the BCI Certificate and Place of Practise (Verification) Rules 2015. “Recently, we saw the Delhi law minister being found guilty of holding a fake law certificate. The BCI is very serious about the issue and taking all necessary steps to weed out fake advocates”.
Chief Justice of Madras high court Sanjay Kishan Kaul also said it was necessary to find out how many people were really involved with legal practise, how many were genuine, how many were earning bread and butter with this profession and how many were in different fields. “If there is violation of norms of the Bar Council, there should be a quick decision and people should know that they can’t get away with it”.
