Many in the past, including MGR, Kamal Haasan, as well as Mani Ratnam have attempted the cinematic representation of legendary writer Kalki’s epic classic Ponniyin Selvan — but none have succeeded beyond the scripting stage! But Saravanaraja of Five Elements has achieved something special by making a 2D animated film on Ponniyin... with a budget of Rs 20 crore, directed by Karthikeyan, who has a massive experience in animation filmmaking. Speaking at the promo of the fim, cartoonist Madan’s remarks surprised everyone.
“To transform a globally accredited novel into an animation movie is a big challenge. And that too in 2D format, it would have consumed a lot of time with more than 200 animation experts working day and night to bring the immortal characters alive. But what really bothers me is the Brahmin (Vaishnavite) character Aazhwarkadiyaan, who appears in the movie with the traditional vertical line on his forehead — that belongs to vadakalai or thenkalai, the sub-sects of Vaishnavaites.
Before anyone goes to court over it — why don’t you camouflage it and give a neutral picture?” said Madan, taking a formidable stance on the subject.
