I am single and loving it: Neil Nitin Mukesh
Actor is looking forward to work in more south Indian films
When Neil Nitin Mukesh was signed on to star in Kaththi, many were surprised at the move. Why would one of Bollywood’s most handsome heroes want to be cast as a villain in his Tamil debut, much less take time off to learn the language from scratch and dub his own lines?
Well, it indeed was Neil who had the last laugh, as his role earned major plaudits on screen for being an iconic match to Ilayathalapathy Vijay — and the movie went on to be a blockbuster, earning Neil a SIIMA ‘15 nomination as well! “I’ve always evaluated scripts based on what they offer me, the technical parts of the film, and if the character interests me. Nevertheless, I must admit I was sceptical and a little scared too. I’d been offered Tamil flicks earlier — big ones at that — but had turned them down. Then, A.R. Murugadoss called me and convinced me that it was the right time to sharpen the axe!” recalls the suave 33-year-old.
Since his Bolly debut in the now-classic thriller Johnny Gaddaar, Neil has gone to be a part of several Hindi movies such as New York, Jail, Lafangey Parindey and David. But the actor says he would love to work in more south Indian films too. “I was psyched to learn and dub my own dialogues. But after Kaththi’s success, its imperative I push boundaries further with my next Kollywood movie — I’m going through a lot of offers now.”
Neil seems to have almost embraced his recent spate of negative alter-egos on screen with the utmost thrill. “In fact, both my next Bolly films feature me in shades of grey. Wazir, directed by Bejoy Nambiar is a suspense thriller starring the likes of Farhan Akthar and Amitabh Bachchan himself. Now only a fool would refuse an offer like that!,” Neil shares.
The actor, who was named after the American astronaut Neil Armstrong by Lata Mangeshkar, also cherishes a number of interests off-screen such as photography, sports and music.
And when it comes to his personal life, we have to nudge him about being one of the most eligible bachelors in the country now. Neil laughs, “I’m very, very single at the moment and honestly loving it. There’s nothing happening on that front.”
