World class checkpost on Tamil Nadu-AP border soon

Upon completion, the check post will be equipped with high-end scanners and CCTV cameras
Chennai: In a first of its kind initiative, Tamil Nadu will soon boast of an integrated world class check post on Tamil Nadu-Andhra border. Construction activity has picked up momentum lately and the complex could be ready in just three months from now.
The check post complex, which is a joint venture between police, transport, revenue and forest departments, will check smuggling, collect commercial taxes, monitor goods movement and prevent movement of forest produce, a top TN government official said.
The PWD had already been given Rs 109 crore for the formation of the integrated modernised check post at Pethikuppam in Tiruvallur on NH 5 and this facility is similar to the integrated check posts at international borders between countries.
Upon completion, the check post will be equipped with high-end scanners and CCTV cameras. The check post will be a boon for the motorists shuttling between Chennai and Andhra with ten entry lanes for vehicles coming into Tamil Nadu and six exit lanes for outgoing vehicles.
Besides being a security zone, bio security measures like introducing sanitisation facilities in the wake of epidemic outbreak can also be added to the facility. Violations such as overloading and evasion of road tax can also be collected without affecting traffic flow, he said.
This is a welcome move and the check post should have washrooms, a resting area for drivers and medical facilities, said K. Thillai Nathan, a cab operator in Gumidippondi. Neighbouring Andhra Pradesh should also adopt a similar facility, as there is a lot of traffic on NH5 between the two states, he added.
