Unique method to save water bodies introduced by Krishi Vigyan Kendra

Fresh water fishes that feed on weeds to be used

KOCHI: A unique method introduced by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra is expected to help in conserving water bodies in Ernakulam where groundwater level is depleting fast because of the widespread destruction of fresh water resources like ponds, wells and streams.

The abandoned ponds and other water sources can be made usable through this biological method, according to KVK experts.

“Growing certain species of fresh water fishes which feed on aquatic weeds will help to clean and revive the water sources. Many public ponds have been abandoned due to excessive growth of aquatic weeds. There are over 140 species of such weeds which are detrimental to fresh water sources,” said Dr. P.A. Vikas, subject specialist at KVK.

Fish species like grass carp (ctenopharyngodon idella) can be used for cleaning water bodies. This fish can eat huge quantities of aquatic weeds, nearly two to three times its body weight. The fish gains an average weight of 50 kilograms.

Since the fish cannot breed in ponds, it is easy to manage its population. A big water body spread in an area of one acre can be revived using just 20 grass carp fishes. The fish seeds are available in the market.

The technology was demonstrated by KVK experts in a pond at Tripunithura on Tuesday. Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute director Dr. A. Gopalakrishnan, Tripunithura municipal chairman R. Venugopal and other officials were present.
