So near yet so far: Firms keep campus recruits waiting

Students who approach the HR department are being told to be patient
Bengaluru: “When will I receive my ‘joining’ date?” This is the common question being asked by thousands of engineering graduates from the city who were offered jobs in the campus placement drive conducted by various companies.
With the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) already announcing their VIII semester results now, the students are waiting to be informed about their employment dates from those companies which selected them during campus placement.
According to the students who were selected by top IT companies, generally these firms used to start issuing joining dates for all those who were selected in the campus recruitment drive from the first week of July. But this year most of the companies still haven’t given joining dates for these students. Students who approach the HR department are being told to be patient. But this is becoming increasingly difficult for them as time passes.
According to Mr. Gururaj H.Y., a student from an elite engineering college of the city, his seniors had received their joining date in the first week of July. “This year VTU announced the final semester results in record time. Now, we are spending our days painfully waiting for emails from the company. In my class, 40 students were selected by an IT major. But none of us received a joining date. We can only hope we get intimated soon,” he said.
Many students are getting impatient and trying other companies. A student said that he was selected on campus by an IT major. But since he wasn’t sent any joining date, finally he joined a construction firm. The HR consultancies reflect a similar trend.
According to Mr. Shrikanth Bhat, an independent HR consultant, most of the students approaching him have already been “placed” by IT companies but have not receive their joining dates till now. “Generally companies start issuing joining dates from July. But there is no need to press the panic button. Last year too, most companies issued joining dates in August,” he explained. Prof. Venugopal KR, principal, UVCE, said students are unnecessarily taking tension.
