Opposition wants Governor Vajubhai Vala to reject changes in KMC Act
The future of the BBMP polls depends on Governor Vajubhai Vala’s approval
Bengaluru: With the state government withdrawing its application on clarification of Supreme Court order, the future of the BBMP polls depends on Governor Vajubhai Vala’s approval to the BBMP Restructuring Bill.
While the Governor is expected to give his reply shortly, highly placed sources told Deccan Chronicle that Opposition parties are lobbying against the approval of The Karnataka Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill.
Sources said that political bigwigs from both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (Secular) met the Governor a couple of days ago and tried to convince him that splitting the BBMP was not a solution to develop the city.
As the state government has sought time from the Supreme Court to complete de-limitation of wards and fixation of reservation as per the 2011 Census before the polls, the verdict is yet to come out.
The Supreme Court is expected to hear the case on July 27. Amid many confusions and uncertainties over BBMP polls, District-in-charge minister Ramalinga Reddy maintained that if the Governor signs the Bill, the Act will come into force and the present BBMP will fail to exist.
This automatically means there will be no necessity to conduct elections. “We are preparing for any of the possibilities. From what it appears as of now, the elections to the BBMP council will most likely be held. We are prepared for the polls and have identified candidates for most of the wards, as per the reservation matrix. We are ready for any consequences,” he stressed. The only way next to the BBMP’s future lies in the hands of the Governor.
