No car day!
Madhapur and Gachibowli will witness the first official car-free Thursday on August 6
Hyderabad: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, and in an attempt to tackle the IT district’s horrifying traffic congestion, the city is preparing itself for ‘Car-Free Thursdays’. The project by Hysea currently has blessings from companies and even the government.
A recent study has claimed that almost a thousand new cars are hitting the roads of Hyderabad every day and the campaign aims to reduce number of cars on the road by asking people to not take cars to work. Instead, people could take the bus, ride a bicycle or even walk to office.
A source attached to the campaign says, “The idea is to encourage people to get away from their personal cars for one day. The initiative is being tested in a small way... eventually reaching out to everyone throughout Hyderabad.”
Madhapur and Gachibowli will witness the first official car-free Thursday on August 6. “The Hitec City area itself has about two to three lakh vehicle plying every day. Thirty per cent of working professionals use their own cars,” says Anurag Singh Rathor, founder of carpooling start-up Zify, which has tied up with the initiative. “Almost 70 per cent of these cars have just one person on-board. We want to increase occupancy levels in each car. And studies suggest when the car has at least three occupants, instances of road rage are drastically less,” adds Rathor.
