National fencing champion thrown out of train, dies
Lucknow: A national fencing champion, Hoshiyar Singh, died on Thursday after he was allegedly thrown off a train by the Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel in Uttar Pradesh.
Hoshiyar Singh, who won the bronze medal in an under-17 championship in 2005, was returning with his family from Mathura to his hometown Kasganj when the incident took place. He boarded the general coach while his mother and wife were in the ladies coach.
While he went to that coach to check his wife who was unwell, he was asked to pay Rs 200 fine for entering the ladies’ compartment. As he refused, the railway police personnel pushed him out of the train.
“They pushed my husband for money. I hope they are punished,” said his wife.
Hoshiyar Singh’s family has demanded a case of murder be registered against the police, who has claimed that the athlete slipped and fell.
